Beyond Intuition: The Science & Laws Behind Psychic Detectives in Crime Solving
Jun 27
In a world where technology dominates crime solving, from DNA analysis to digital forensics, the idea that psychic detectives can contribute meaningfully to investigations often meets with scepticism or outright dismissal. Yet, beneath the surface of popular culture’s fascination with psychic sleuths lies a complex interplay of consciousness, quantum physics, and documented cases that suggest mediumship and psychic abilities is a valid consciousness technology useful in fighting crime or even wars.
Anne Miles, a Melbourne medium defines spirituality as “a technology of consciousness that uses quantum entanglement, our innate physiology and natural geometry to communicate instantaneously with unseen realms through heart centred intention, thought, frequency and inspired action to co-create. All defined as The Art of Alchemy.”
As someone who has explored mediumship deeply, both experientially and through rigorous inquiry, Anne has come to understand that psychic abilities are not mere superstition, entertainment or even mental illness. Instead, they tap into a profound and scientifically intriguing dimension of reality - one that challenges conventional notions of space, time, and information. This is a quantum field that holds the unchangeable record of everything allowing mediums to dive in and find the hidden truths including the answers to many crimes.
The Intersection of Science and Psychic Phenomena
Modern physics, particularly quantum mechanics, offers a framework that helps explain how psychic phenomena might operate. The observer effect, for example, shows that the act of observation influences the behaviour of particles, suggesting a universe that is not purely objective but intertwined with consciousness. Quantum entanglement, famously called “spooky action at a distance” by Albert Einstein demonstrates that particles can instantaneously influence each other regardless of distance. This phenomenon provides a plausible scientific basis for how mediums might access information beyond the normal constraints of time and space, effectively “reading” the quantum field where all information is stored and connected.
Mathematician Mark Fiorentino’s work on the Unified Field Theory and the Trefoil Knot as the elusive ‘God particle’, further supports this view. His research points to a fundamental particle or energy pattern that underpins all existence, including our conscious thoughts. This suggests that consciousness itself is woven into the fabric of reality, making it possible for mediums to access information remotely through intention, frequency, and focused awareness.

Documented Cases of Psychic Detectives Assisting Police
While the scientific community often demands rigorous proof, law enforcement agencies have sometimes turned to psychic detectives with surprising results. There are documented instances where psychic insights have led to breakthroughs in cold cases or missing persons investigations in particular.
There are notable case studies and examples from Australia where psychics have been involved in crime investigations:
The television series Sensing Murder (originally from New Zealand but also aired in Australia) features psychics investigating real cold cases from Australia and New Zealand. Cases include the 1976 murder of Tracey Ann Patient in Auckland, the 1974 disappearance and murder of two women near Brisbane, and the 1986 death of Elizabeth Barnard on Phillip Island, Victoria. Psychics such as Deb Webber, Kelvin Cruickshank, and Sue Nicholson have been involved in these investigations.
Australian police have at times consulted psychics or mediums to assist with missing persons or murder cases, as reported in news articles highlighting “surprising Australian police tactics” involving psychics to guide investigations.
Specific Australian cases featured in Sensing Murder and similar shows include:
> The disappearance and murder of Lorraine Wilson and Wendy Evans in Queensland (1974).
> The 1986 death of Elizabeth Barnard at Phillip Island, Victoria.
> The 1977 murder of Lesley Calvert in Australia, investigated with psychic input.
These examples demonstrate that psychic detectives have been engaged in Australian crime investigations, often in cold cases where conventional leads have stalled.
Australia has documented cases and media coverage showing psychics assisting police investigations, particularly through the Sensing Murder series and related reports.
These cases, while anecdotal, are supported by police testimonials and investigative outcomes, suggesting that psychic abilities can complement traditional investigative methods when used responsibly.
Mediumship as a Consciousness Technology
Mediumship is often misunderstood as fortune-telling or a sideshow act, but it is better described as a consciousness technology - a method of accessing and interpreting information beyond the ordinary senses. This technology relies on the natural entanglement of consciousness and the quantum field, allowing mediums to receive impressions, images, or messages that can guide investigations.
This perspective aligns with the research of physicists like Federico Faggin, who proposes Quantum Information Panpsychism (QIP), a theory positing that consciousness is a fundamental property of the quantum field itself. According to this view, our physical brains act as interfaces for a deeper, non-local consciousness that can access information beyond the immediate physical environment however as a medium Anne Miles understands this work is done by the mysteries of our hearts not our brains. Even so, the outcomes support the theory of QIP.
Evidence of Consciousness Beyond Human Life
Recent groundbreaking research conducted in Germany has provided compelling evidence that consciousness may persist beyond physical death and can even be tracked to distant locations in space. At the First-Person-Science of Consciousness conference held in Mannheim in 2025, scientists presented clinical experiments documenting cases of terminal lucidity. Individuals exhibited clear, conscious awareness shortly before or after clinical death, despite severe brain impairment. One remarkable study involved monitoring patients declared clinically dead and detecting signatures of conscious awareness that appeared to extend beyond the body, suggesting a form of consciousness independent of brain activity. This challenges the conventional materialist view that consciousness ceases when the brain stops and aligns with emerging theories that consciousness is a fundamental, non-local phenomenon possibly connected to the quantum field. Such findings open new frontiers in understanding mediumship and psychic abilities as genuine consciousness technologies that transcend physical limitations.
Challenges and the Need for Open-Minded Research
Scepticism toward psychic detectives is understandable, given the prevalence of fraud and the difficulty of scientifically validating psychic phenomena. Controlled studies have often failed to replicate psychic successes under laboratory conditions, partly due to the complexity of measuring consciousness and the influence of intention. The “Observer Effect” may be an influence here impacting the medium’s outcomes depending on what is in the mind of the study conductor and the intention and expectations of those observing.
The concept of the "Observer Effect" in quantum physics is most closely associated with Werner Heisenberg, who introduced it as part of his Uncertainty Principle in the 1920s. Heisenberg explained that the act of measuring certain properties of a particle (like position or momentum) inevitably disturbs the system and the outcomes of the study. Thomas Young is credited with the original double-slit experiment demonstrating wave interference of light (1801) and later, in the 20th century, the double-slit experiment was adapted to electrons and other particles, revealing their wave-particle duality by modern scientists Claus Jönsson’s 1961 and Akira Tonomura 1989.
The outright dismissal of psychic detectives overlooks the growing body of research supporting consciousness-based explanations of reality like these. The stigma against psychic phenomena may also stem from elitist control within scientific institutions, which can hinder open inquiry into these areas.
The key is to approach psychic detectives as complementary tools rather than replacements for forensic science. When integrated carefully, psychic insights can provide new leads, identify key evidence or suspects especially in cases where traditional methods have stalled.
Bridging Worlds: Toward Mental Health and Investigative Reform
The misunderstanding of mediumship extends beyond law enforcement into mental health and the relevant laws around diagnosis and non-voluntary hospitalisation or medication. Many gifted individuals have been wrongly institutionalised due to confusion between spiritual experiences and psychosis. Researchers Stanislav and Christina Grof have described “spiritual emergencies” as intense consciousness shifts that mimic psychiatric symptoms but require compassionate support and skill development rather than confinement and medication.
Many psychiatrists differentiate between explained and the unexplained to differentiate between psychic abilities and psychosis. If the medium hears voices or other interactions with the unseen but they can be explained by validation from external sources they would be considered a paranormal phenomena or external phenomena. Those voices that are persecutory or unexplainable would be considered psychosis.
Recognising mediumship as a valid consciousness technology can help reform both mental health and investigative systems. Educating professionals about the science and evidence behind psychic abilities will reduce stigma and foster collaboration, ultimately benefiting those seeking justice and healing.
With mental health factors impacting our society and crime rates it is important to consider the two intertwined.

Social Reform: Spiritual Leadership Leading the Way
In many African cultures, psychic abilities are not pathologised but revered as vital spiritual gifts integral to community wellbeing. Traditional healers, such as the sangomas of Southern Africa, serve as respected and revered spiritual leaders who access ancestral wisdom through mediumship, divination, and trance states to guide, heal, and protect their communities. Rather than being seen as symptoms of mental illness, these abilities are embraced as consciousness technologies that connect the living with the spirit world, providing insight into illness, social disharmony, and unresolved mysteries.
This holistic worldview contrasts sharply with the Western mental health system’s tendency to medicalise such experiences as psychosis or delusion. Recognising and learning from these indigenous perspectives could inspire a more compassionate and culturally sensitive approach to psychic phenomena worldwide, emphasizing support and understanding over confinement and stigma. Once we do this, then we open up society to full spiritual transparency in a world where no crime goes unseen to more of us.
Legal Reform: Case Precedence Has the Answers
There are differing laws around the legalities of using mediumship for crime fighting but ultimately there are options to lawfully use mediumship. The police and government have been lawfully using mediumship for, at least, most of this century yet it is still treated with stigma and often overlooked as a side show or mental illness.
Depending on the state or country there are different rules about what constitutes enough spark to begin an investigation, and secondly what constitutes evidence in court.
In Australia there is case precedence that allows for mediumship to be used to begin a police investigation lawfully. It is potentially just as potent that should a medium offer tips and insights to police and they decline to investigate them that this would be precedence for negligence on their part, through inaction.
There have been isolated instances, such as an unnamed federal police officer suspended for consulting a clairvoyant regarding threats against Prime Minister John Howard, but this was not condoned by the federal police.
Despite the official stance, some former officers have acknowledged that psychics are sometimes used unofficially or informally, and psychics like Debbie Malone have been consulted in some New South Wales cases, though their contributions have not independently solved cases.
Regarding the earliest use of psychics for crime fighting and government intelligence more broadly, the first well-documented government interest in psychic phenomena in intelligence work comes from the United States during the Cold War, notably with the CIA’s Stargate Project starting in the 1970s, which explored remote viewing as a psychic intelligence tool.
In some countries it seems that mediumship for crime fighting is permissible depending on the type of statutory case it is, when an existing case was opened and even depending on whether psychological harm is involved.
Mediumship can’t be used as evidence in court, but the evidence discovered through the initial mediumship reading and subsequent investigation likely will be permissible and lawful.
Mental health laws impact the topic of mediumship and the interpretation of mental illness and impact those with psychic abilities severely. These laws impact the right to be heard, evidence considered and who is deemed mentally ill. Whilst it isn't directly related to the framework of crime solving using mediumship, it is an impact on how we see this topic in general and who we consider a reliable source in society. By using remote viewing and consciousness technologies we can also dive into the truth of situations to determine if someone is telling the truth or not like a lie detector without bias to our own judgements of whether someone is mentally ill or not. Using mediumship allows for a good 'sense check' at the very least and to lead to evidence to help resolve the questions over those accused of being mentally ill or unreliable with subjective judgement.

Expanding Our Understanding of Reality
Psychic detectives challenge us to expand our understanding of consciousness and reality. Beyond intuition, mediumship is a scientifically plausible consciousness technology that, when respected and integrated to aid crime solving. Not only that we will deepen our grasp of the universe, understand each other better, and be more accountable for our behaviour and how we treat each other as well.
As research in quantum physics, consciousness studies, and parapsychology advances, the boundary between science and spirituality blurs. This convergence invites us to embrace a more holistic view of knowledge; one that honours both empirical evidence and the profound mysteries of human consciousness.
By fostering open-minded inquiry and bridging the gap between traditional science and psychic phenomena, we can unlock new pathways to truth, justice, and understanding.
